Make My Day 2020: Make Your Own Make My Day @ Home!

Open Call for Workshop Artist

Brief: we are delighted to announce an open call for a North West based artist/maker to design a workshop for this year’s reimagined Make My Day! 2020.

We are seeking proposals for a playful workshop activity that fits with this year’s Make Your Own Make My Day @ Home brief.

About the Event

This year’s Make My Day has undergone a radical rethink to ensure creativity and community spirit will carry on in these strange times. As ever the community and the participants are the festival and this year more so than ever as we encourage people to MAKE YOUR OWN MAKE MY DAY @ HOME - providing quality artist designed workshops with instructions and videos to create at home.

In terms of how people will take part in the ‘event’ this year - this will happen in two slightly different ways:

  1. By signing up online and downloading the creative activity instructions and watching the demonstration videos. They will gather their own materials at home, and undertake the projects in their own time, using their own resources and use of the PDF/videos to show them what to do.

  1. Our second group - Creative Community Champions - made up of West End based participants will receive pre-made packs of materials which will be delivered to their door, along with instruction sheets - and either the video demos on DVD (if they have no internet access) or watch the videos online for instruction. They will, again, be completing the projects in their own time, without someone to show them what to do...

We plan to release a new activity each week - for five weeks leading up to the festival day Sun 9 Aug. Then on that weekend - we will release a final pack of multiple activities for people to take part in making on Sun afternoon. We will encourage people to fill their window or front gardens with all the ‘makes’ they have taken part in over the weeks  - add up to a mini-MMD in their own home…

The proposed workshop must:

  • Consider accessibility, with multiple entry points for different ages and skill levels.

  • Meet health and safety & risk assessment conditions (we can assist with this).

  • Be deliverable within the budget and timescales.

Key things to consider:

  • Simplicity - the main thing to consider here - is that whatever activities are sent out, they need to be simple enough to be undertaken without having you there as a facilitator.

  • Fun, vibrant and imaginative.

  • Use of recycled, repurposed and readily available  materials - we are aiming for 90% with a very small need to purchase or source items. These could be manmade or natural or a combination of the 2. We want the activities to be widely accessible for people to take part and get involved.

  • Workshop makes are intended for people to fill their window or front yard with their creations and make their own display at home and showcase to the outside world.

Think Wray Scarecrow Festival or the Coronavirus rainbow campaign…but with a Make My Day twist!
